What data we process
- Account: name, email address, profile picture and identifier provided to us by Google when you sign in. We do not receive your Google password.
- Your texts: chapters, outline, cards, notes, rules and their version history.
- AI usage: which feature you use, how many tokens it consumes and what it costs. If you connect your own AI, we store your key encrypted.
- Payments: your customer and subscription identifiers in Stripe, the status of your subscription and your credit transactions. Card details are processed by Stripe; we neither see nor store them.
- Waiting list: the email address you tried to sign in with while access was closed.
- Technical data: server logs (IP address, date, page requested) needed for security and operation.
Purposes and legal basis
- Providing the service (saving and syncing your novel, the AI features, your account): performance of the contract (art. 6(1)(b) GDPR).
- Charges, invoicing and accounting and tax obligations: legal obligation (art. 6(1)(c)).
- Security and abuse prevention (usage limits, technical logs): legitimate interest (art. 6(1)(f)).
- Service notices (changes to the terms, incidents, your subscription): performance of the contract. We will only send you marketing communications if you give us your consent, and you can withdraw it at any time.
We do not sell your data or use it for advertising. We do not train AI models on your texts.
Artificial intelligence
When you use an AI feature (automatic card updates, which you can switch off in Settings; questions; proofreading; outline summaries or colours), we send the AI provider the text needed for that task. We use the providers' application programming interfaces (APIs), which under their terms do not use that data to train their models. If you connect your own AI, the data is sent to the provider you choose, with your key and under your contract with that provider.
Who we share it with (processors)
- Hosting: the provider of the server on which Escaletta runs.
- Google (Google Ireland Ltd.): sign-in.
- Stripe (Stripe Payments Europe Ltd.): payments and invoices.
- AI provider configured in the service (for example, OpenAI, Anthropic or Google), only with the text for each task.
Some of these providers may process data in the United States. Those transfers are covered by the EU-U.S. Data Privacy Framework or by standard contractual clauses approved by the European Commission. Other than in these cases, we will only disclose data where required by law.
How long we keep it
- While you have an account, we keep your texts and their history.
- If you delete a project or your account, the data stops being available and is blocked (art. 32 LOPDGDD): nobody uses it and it is kept only to meet legal obligations or deal with possible claims, for the periods set by law (for example, six years for accounting records). It is then erased.
- Technical server logs are kept only for as long as strictly necessary for security.
Your rights
You can request access to, rectification, erasure, objection to, restriction of processing and portability of your data by writing to [email protected] or by post to the address above. You can download a full copy of your novels from Settings › Backup, and delete your account from Account › Delete my account.
If you believe we have not handled your data properly, you can lodge a complaint with the Agencia Española de Protección de Datos (Spanish Data Protection Agency, www.aepd.es).
Cookies and storage on your device
Escaletta only uses technical storage that is necessary for the service: a session cookie to keep you signed in, another that remembers the language you choose, and browser storage (IndexedDB and localStorage) to save your novel on your device so you can write offline. When you sign in, Google may use its own technical cookies. We do not use analytics or advertising cookies, which is why we do not ask for your consent to them.
Age
You must be at least 14 years old to create an account. To purchase a paid plan, you must be 18 or have the authorisation of your parents or guardians.
